Networks sustaining life

I was listening to a Radiolab story the other day about trees and their complex underground network.

It was about how fungi networks connect plants together and transfer nutrients, minerals, and a bunch of other things. A symbiosis where each organism benefits from the connection. Trees, plants, fungi, soil; an ecosystem all helping each other get stronger to become a stable community.

Then it got me thinking about humans; how most of us crave a community to belong to. That's partly why social network apps work, right? Because of our desire for belonging and connecting.

Then it got me thinking of the world and the universe. What other connections are out there similar to the fungi network? From the cellular to the universal levels?

Is our world on Earth just a big social network? What if we destroy that network? What if we keep fighting instead of helping each other? What if the majority of people disengages in making their community better? When a forest network fails, the inhabitants dies. Could humankind kill itself by fighting itself?
