(Reality - Context) + Assumptions = Instagram
What you see on Instagram is just a few pages of someone's life, not the whole story.
I came up with this equation because I got tired of the assumptions people made about me when I used to use Instagram. I posted travel highlights and hiking photos, and suddenly people thought that was my entire life. It became other peopleâs identity for me.
And no, I donât want to be vulnerable on Instagram in the way people expect these days. We donât owe the internet every detail, and thatâs okay.
Hereâs what the equation means:
First, context gets removed from reality. We share moments selectively, trimming away the messy background and everything it took to get there. A happy moment doesnât reveal the grief or anxiety that might be happening at the same time. Even a happy life doesnât show the quiet effort or invisible struggles it takes to build, sustain, or just hold it all together.
Then, people fill in the blanks with assumptions. They project their own stories: âHer life is perfect.â âShe has no struggles.â âHer relationship is flawless.â âShe has an amazing career.â
Because of those assumptions, people start to think they know who you are. Everything about you.
And that equals Instagram:Â reality edited, context removed, and assumptions added.
Then the âperfectâ couple breaks up. Or the fitness influencer actually has been dealing with an autoimmune disorder. Itâs a reminder that thereâs always more to the story. People are more than their Instagram feeds.
I realized I was doing the same thing too. Filling in blanks about peopleâs lives without knowing what was actually happening behind the scenes. Itâs an easy trap to fall into.
Have you noticed how much assumptions you add when you scroll through someoneâs feed?
Next time youâre doomscrolling, remember: youâre only seeing a few pages, not the whole story. That little bit of awareness makes Instagram a lot healthier to consume.
