Toe-friendly shoes
I went to a podiatrist for toe pain and while he didn't fix my toe pain, he did let me know that I have bunions and that they would only get worse, and I'd need surgery one day. I couldn't accept that so I did some research that doctors would hate and dug deep into toe-friendly shoes. Most barefoot, toe-friendly shoes are ugly and expensive, but they're getting a lot better. Here's my list so far.
(I'm listing mostly brands because it's easier but if you're curious about the exact shoe that I've tried, just reach out. This is also US-centric; I know that Europe has a lot of barefoot brands but shipping and returns would be too difficult and costly.)

Ideal Criteria
- Forefoot shaped, anatomically correct toe-box, wide toe box, but not too wide
- Stack height less than or equal to 10mm, but could be more for hiking
- 0mm - 4mm heel drop
- Minimal or no toe spring
- Good reviews
- No arch support or heel rise. Okay if there’s a little bit for hiking shoes.
- For hiking, lugs of 4-6mm
- For running, 5-8mm stack height (really flat shoes are not good for running for me)
🥾 HIKING
Current ones
Inov8 trailfly
Maybe try
- Joe Nimble - too expensive
- Topo Athletic - if they have one with low stack height and minimal toe spring and heel drop
- Vivobarefoot - too expensive, probably won't hold up to the hard hikes that I do, and people complain about blisters
- Xero - may not hold up to the hard hikes that I do
- Altra trail - curious, but people say the lugs don't hold up well
- Astral Designs - ugly
- Flux - they just got into trail runners so not sure if their shoes will hold up. upper is also all knit, need more protection
Tried and didn't like
- Merrell trail glove - older versions were better, newer versions are uncomfortable
👟 ROAD RUNNING & ATHLETIC
Current ones
I currently don't have toe-friendly running shoes. I have Nike knit running shoes and while the toe area is narrow, the knit still allows my toes to splay a little. They've also held up for 10 years, which barefoot shoes seem to have not figured out yet.
Maybe try
- TYR
- Topo Athletic
- Inov8
- Joe Nimble
- Vivobarefoot
- Xero
- Altra Escalante
Tried and didn't like
Lem's primal. They were expensive and ripped in a year. I expect expensive shoes to last longer.
🧦 SOCKS
I don't like to fuss about socks so I just buy the Costco Kirkland brand black socks in bulk. For hiking, I have a few wool socks that I've bought in random places.
🥾 BOOTS
I have not found an affordable toe-friendly boot. I've settled with buying wide boots or boots that are half a size bigger. I'm not in boots all day anyways so I'm not too worried about them. I also like boots with heels, so I don't follow most of my criteria for boots.
Current ones
- Abeo
- Amazon Basic combat boots
🧦 CASUAL
Current ones
- Flux trainers
- Tolos (these are holding up pretty well, better than the Flux trainers)
Maybe try
- Feelgrounds
- Vivobarefoot
- Xero
👠 DRESSY
I'm rarely in dressy shoes so I'm not worried if they're not toe-friendly. I don't follow most of my criteria for dressy shoes.
Current ones
- Xero flats for women
Maybe try
- origoshoes.com
- Vivaia
